Anytime Is The Perfect Time To Take A Colorado Fishing Vacation
Virtually nothing can measure up to the experience of hooking a cutthroat trout amidst the majestic peaks of the Colorado Rockies. Beyond just reeling in a fish, many anglers feel an almost zen-like experience fly-fishing the cold waters of the Roaring Fork Valley.
Running north and south between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, the Roaring Fork Valley is comprised of four stunning rivers: the Colorado, the Roaring Fork, the Frying Pan, and the Crystal. The Roaring Fork, From just inside the town of Aspen to the bridge at Upper Woody Creek, and from the junction of the Crystal and Roaring Fork north of Carbondale {with the Colorado River|joins the Colorado River| the confluence with the Colorado River, has been declared Gold Medal Water by the Colorado Wildlife Commission.
The river’s class does not prevent the everyday angler or family simply looking for a vacation in Colorado from fully enjoying the experience of fishing the valley. There are numerous guided fishing tours and the majority offer rental gear and short classes on fly-fishing, as the casting and retrieving process may be unfamiliar to the average angler. A fishing guide can provide small one- or two-man rafts fro float fishing, or a dory boat if you are in the mood to take on some rapids. Even for anglers familiar to fly-fishing guides are generally experienced locals who can make your trip more better by putting you right on the fish.
The portion from Carbondale to Glenwood Springs is crowded with trout. Pools of pocket water dot this area, as well as scores of riffles and shelves that the trout stack up on.
The Roaring Fork Valley’s high elevation and hatches that occur all year long provide fishing year-round so fishing can be as qualityin January as it is in July, although between June and September is the best time. Public access is easy, as much of the River runs through the White River National Forest.
There is a robust population of fish up and down the valley. Brook, Brown, and the famous Rainbow trout call the Roaring Fork home, as well as a solid population mountain whitefish.
The Roaring Fork begins above 10,000 feet near Independence Pass . Winding down through the valley to its confluence with the Colorado; the Roaring Fork can be floated during the summer with the benefit of massive snowmelt.
While the whitefish catch is unlimited, trout has a limit of four.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife provides information on fishing licenses and regulations. Some sections of the Roaring Fork have unique size or release regulations. You can also purchase a fishing license online.
